Overview
Introduced in the 2004 Chevrolet Aveo, the E-TEC II 1.6L is designed and manufactured by GM Daewoo Auto & Technology. This compact inline four-cylinder engine combines competitive output, sophisticated technologies such as a variable-geometry intake manifold, low maintenance, low emissions and outstanding fuel economy

The dual-overhead cam E-TEC II 1.6L is installed transversely in the Aveo, available with either a D16 SW/R five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. With the manual, the Aveo achieves 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates. The automatic features a “hold control” button, which allows the driver to shift manually and choose a launch gear that best manages wheel spin in slippery conditions.

A durable cast-iron cylinder block provides the E-TEC 1.6L’s foundation, optimized with a deep skirt design to minimize both wear and vibration. A structural aluminum oil pan further reduces noise, vibration and harshness, increasing the powertrain’s rigidity and ensuring efficient heat transfer from the block.

The aluminum cylinder head was developed with math-based tools. Both combustion chamber and port design are optimized to improve combustion efficiency and promote good specific fuel consumption. Valve size and cam profiles are carefully matched to the head’s flow characteristics to increase volumetric efficiency. The coolant passages are optimized for efficient cooling in extreme conditions.

The 1.6L’s exhaust manifold is cast from iron to maximize durability, yet its thin-wall design makes it lighter than a conventional cast-iron manifold and provides excellent heat-management properties. Like the manifold, the dual-muffler exhaust system is optimized to reduce engine noise with minimal exhaust flow restriction.

The intake manifold, on the other hand, is manufactured of a thermoplastic material to minimize weight and maximize the flow of induction air by reducing friction. Its length and shape were developed to increase air-flow rate and allow both impressive low-range torque and free-breathing, high-rev horsepower. At low rpm, intake air flows through a longer runner, increasing torque as much as ten percent. Above 4600 rpm, a valve in the manifold shortens runner length, increasing the flow rate and promoting high-rpm performance. Finally, the 1.6L features a large intake resonator that reduces the rushing sound as air courses into the engine. The bottom line is impressive performance with smooth, quiet operation at all engine speeds.

The E-TEC 1.6L includes a number of durability enhancements not typically found on engines in this class. The head gasket features three layers of sheet metal; it’s designed to last the engine’s useful life, with the same excellent sealing properties over the last 10,000 miles as over the first. A single accessory drive belt features an auto-tensioner that ensures optimal belt tension without adjustment throughout the belt’s life.

For 2006, just two years after its introduction, the 1.6L was equipped with electronic throttle control—a premium feature in the sub-compact class. It was also certified to ULEV-II emissions standards. Combined with outstanding fuel economy, it makes the Aveo one of the cleanest vehicles in North America.

The ETEC II 1.6L is manufactured at the powertrain production facility in Bupyung, South Korea.
