I had allways hoped to see you take you Optra up into the 350hp+ range

I can proimse you I know lots about needing a reliable everyday car, I have such a busy business/family life that I'm hard pressed to put in more than 40 hours a year on my cars and I don't trust anyone to help me so my cars sit for months at a time between stages of build up.

That's why I bought a mitsu lancer ralliart, which it a horrible excuse for a car compared to my project vehicles.

In your case your not buying the IS300 as your daily driver to make your Optra fast, your downgrading your Optra to a daily driver so you can make your IS300 fast.

Honestly, it's the easier, less expensive way to have a fun 350hp car, but there are shitloads of modified IS300's out there, where as Canada has perhaps only a couple of Modified Optra's in the whole country.

I guess it comes down to being a little disapointed in your Optra project, I allways thought you would eventually go all in and build a beast.

Sorry to hear you are disappointed.. however the Optra isn't gone, and it is still boosted and daily driven which is alot more than can be said about almost every other Optra in Canada. I could have just completely de-modded and sold it.

As I'm getting older myself I want a little bit more luxury and class without sacrificing power for which the IS300 is a perfect fit and a little more fun with RWD. Sure there are lots of guys that have boosted IS300's, but 97% of them are in the USA. Also the other thing is that half of them don't even run properly because people don't know how to make the stock computer still run all the necessary functions while using the standalone to control the engine. So what I've seen is alot of them with tons of $$$ and time put in, and then turn into show cars because they can't even be daily driven anymore. And then what happens..... up for sale or part out.

Again theres no need for negativity, I'm not gone and neither is the Optra. I certainly appreciate your help throughout the turbo Optra project and also everyone else's help. Its been a great learning experience, lots of fun and hopefully this build thread has helped many other people to be inspired.

BTW, you are driving a Lancer now? What happened to the MS3?

Fuel Economy

Postby exist3nce » Fri Jan 27, 2012 5:03 pm

I wanted to add to my review of the new turbo setup in the Optra....

Just calculated the fuel economy I've been getting and its quite good! I did 1388 km on 146.1L which translates to 10.5 L / 100km ..... close to stock numbers yet still much more power than stock :)

I sold the MS3 quite a while back, then I drove my Opel Calibra as a daily driver.

Unfortunately last winter was not kind to the Cali, the system controlling the 4X4 system was shutting down in cold weather.

Given it's a rare car I didn't want to break it, so I went looking for another AWD car.

It was just a daily driver, so I didn't want to buy and EVO, it was between a Lancer Raliart ( AWD Turbo ) and a Subaru WRX, but I wanted to make sure my wife could drive it and I would have had to buy a 2 yr old WRX to get an automatic.

So, bought the Raliart and I've hated it ever since.

Major lag, squishy suspension, mediocre power to weight.

Had I used my brain I should have forgot the cheaper cars and looked at an audi or EVO.

IS300 First Driving Impressions

Postby exist3nce » Thu Feb 09, 2012 8:44 pm

Finally there has been a break with the crappy weather over the past few days and I've been driving the IS!! :D

Its been amazing!! The power is so much fun and it sounds super mean when that wastegate opens... yet still cruises around with a "slightly modified OEM performance growl". Makes an awesome sleeper :) Surprisingly its able to grip quite decent on the crappy all season tires that came with it in these low temperatures.

Drive-ability is about 90% of stock I would say. Theres a few small hiccups here and there that will be ironed out with street tuning as we go, but nothing major. Cold starts are no problem so far down to -10 deg C and same with warm and hot restarts. All in all I'm very pleased with how this turned out - its pretty much like stock just way more power and higher rev limit :D

I'll get some driving video if i get a chance as the car won't be out for very long (the weather is turning crap again).

Phase2 - 520whp, built motor, GT40R

Postby exist3nce » Fri Oct 19, 2012 8:54 pm

So I just wanted to update you all on what I've been up to lately.....

I've done a build on my IS300 motor and upped the boost and power some :)

New Setup:

GT4088R 0.95 AR
AMS EMS v1
Wiseco custom pistons 9.5CR
Factory SupraTT Rods
ACL Race bearings
Ported/Polished head and manifolds
Brian Crower 264 cams
Crower valve springs and titanium retainers
Still using a full 3" exhaust with factory SupraTT muffler too!

Got the car loaded on the dyno and I'm very happy with the results =)

520 whp / 368 lbft @ 16psi

A little more power on a tiny turbo

haha you have no idea.... it is VERY fun lol Sometimes a little scary too!

Soo just wanted to say that I'm changing the setup on the Optra a little bit.... My goal is for 200whp on the small CT12B turbo. To achieve this, I'm collecting the following parts again:

External wastegate (for more precise and stable boost control)
Apexi AVCR (the one I had went to the IS300 project. But this boost controller is absolutely amazing for RPM based boost - so I will be acquiring a second one)
Return fuel system (I already have the modifed basket and Walbro pump, so I just need to find another regulator - will probably adapt a stock Honda regulator for this purpose to keep cost down)

Right now the car sits at about ~165whp .... so another ~35whp to achieve my goal :)

Oh I should mention... I'm still keeping the stock Lexus IS300 muffler on here for the near-OEM quietness...

Will the turbo actually do it??? Stay tuned to find out ;)

Plans for this are still in place..... work has just been INSANE lately, so no time for car fun stuff at all :(

Postby exist3nce » Fri Feb 01, 2013 6:22 pm

Hoping to get started on this soon.... I've got the parts that I need :D

Another Used AVCR for progressive boost control ;)

Image

A friend hooked me up with this, after his project outgrew it lol. I must have return system to run any more than 8-10psi. Yes I could have just kept the car return in the long run, but I didn't have the cash at the time for that.

Image

Going back to external wastegate.... the internal one just sucks for precise and accurate boost control.

External gate and ported cover complete!

Postby exist3nce » Tue Feb 26, 2013 5:50 pm

Here we have the new external gate welded on along with a slip fit recirculated dump tube...

Also if you look closely, you will see that we ported the compressor cover for anti surge and increased turbo spooling sound ;)

Fuel return completed and turbo re-mounted

Postby exist3nce » Thu Feb 28, 2013 5:33 pm

Here's some pics of the fuel system setup... I have switched my 2 additional injectors over to Siemens Deka 63 lb/hr as they are supposed to have one of the widest spray patterns which is well suited for the throttle body type injection they are being used for. We also tried to run as much hardline for the return as possible under the car (the line actually goes up into the engine bay).

Dyno Results

Postby exist3nce » Mon Mar 04, 2013 5:59 pm

Finally got this little badass setup tuned, and I'm quite happy with the results.

Image

Despite the turbo being undersized for 2.0L we managed to squeeze out:

214 whp / 207 lb ft.

Image

Through progressive boost tuning I was able to keep the torque nice and stable until about 5500 rpm where the tiny turbine starts to choke its life away haha. We were able to verify this by testing exhaust back-pressure pre-turbo during the dyno runs with a boost gauge. This is about as far as we dare to go on this turbo, and the numbers make perfect sense. Two of these turbos on a Supra 3.0L can crank out about 450whp max, so we are pretty much at the limit.

Image

All in all not a huge amount of power, but this is quite fun to drive on the streets because the power is always there from almost any RPM.

Stay tuned for dyno video :)
